A Historic Milestone when Rosenior Breaks Barriers

"Rosenior represents an excellent manager who knows the game inside out, and that's the most important thing.

"However, as the Blues' first African heritage player, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who earned his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club appointed Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next head coach after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls the London club.

There have been just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including those holding interim positions – in England's top flight since its inception 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and played not far from here, he understands the local fans," added Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters observe someone like Liam managing their club, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that champions what's right… it is impactful demonstrating the path is there.

"So yes, this represents a massive step for the club, for London, for all aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Do the Numbers Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present top flight gaffer of colour.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers throughout English football is matched by a lack of representation in the boardroom.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, 43% of Premier League players are from black backgrounds.

However, research from the equality organization revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams at most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching positions, based on figures from eleven clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

Across all coaching roles – encompassing head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the statistic is 5%.

"He's certainly broken barriers in terms of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of ability that exists in the black and underrepresented groups... they want the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to persist in striving to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time English head coaches presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails the continent's remaining big five divisions in terms of national representation.

16 of the 20 top-flight coaches in Serie A are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and Ten of the 18 are French.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every young English coaches from an academy background are, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's really motivating for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see someone land such a role with his background and we hope he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there due to ability'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a brief stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered in combating inequality within the sport and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He started writing articles for The Guardian, and in one piece he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not influence ability and said opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: that significant lack of diversity leads to misunderstandings of players with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In further Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "ashamed" to hear a staff member make a homophobic slur. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently built his reputation in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's first black boss in Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
