Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
