Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
